The Low Down On Cell-Based Meat

The Low Down On Cell-Based Meat

Written by Jenny Rose Edwards

Cultured meat, cell-based meat, clean meat, lab grown meat… They’re terms we’re hearing a lot about lately, but just what IS this new form of meat, and why do we need it? Well, that’s what we’re going to attempt to answer in this article…

2018 was a breakthrough year for cell-based meat. We’re seeing startups like Memphis Meats and JUST pop up more and more in the news for their innovations, and it’s all because of the high demand for ethical, sustainable food, that doesn’t compromise on taste.

WHAT IS CELL-BASED MEAT?

To put it simply, cell-based meat is meat that is cultivated through sourcing cells from animals. It’s more ethical and better for the environment. “The clean meat revolution represents a seismic technological shift for humanity, with strong potential sustainability messages.”

WHY DO WE NEED IT?

Humans can’t keep producing, consuming, and wasting meat at the current rate we are doing it.. And with the population rapidly climbing, we absolutely must find an alternative solution.

And could that solution be cell-based meat?

With cell-based meat, we can solve the issue of the animal agriculture industry, whilst also allowing people to continue eating meat. Giving it up altogether isn’t a realistic solution for everyone, and so becoming reducetarians (by decreasing our meat intake), and warming to the idea of cell-based meat is one of the best outcomes that we have.
